About Youth Martial Arts

The South Bay Family YMCA is proud to offer high quality martial arts programming to our youth program participants. Our focus is to allow your children to develop their spirit, mind, and body through our martial arts in an encouraging, non-intimidating, and family friendly environment not found anywhere else in the South Bay. Our instructors are among the best in the their respective martial art and will ensure that your child learns the value of hard work, discipline, honor, integrity, and respect for themselves and others.



Tae Kwon Do

is a Korean Martial art with an emphasis on kicking techniques with quick and powerful strikes
distinguishing it self from other striking
martial arts such as Karate and Kung Fu.

Tae Kwon Do is on of the most popular
martial arts in the world in terms of practitioners.

Ages: 4-14 Years old

Capoeira

is a beautiful and captivating martial art
that incorporates music, dance, and acrobatics.
Our class is unique in that all levels and ages
participate in the same class allowing families to
"play" together as well as those seriously looking to develop their martial art self-defense skills.

Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a unique ground fighting martial art that was modified from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu to allow a smaller, weaker opponent to defend a against a much larger, stronger opponent using joint locks and chokes. Another unique characteristic to this martial art is that not one single strike needs to be thrown to subdue your opponent! The principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes using body leverage and technique over strength and power. This class is also great for those intersted in establishing a foundation in Mixed Martial Arts.


Class Days: Mondays and Wednesdays

Level: Beginner

Ages: 4-7 years old

Emphasis: Focus is placed on learning the basic fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu such as rolling, falling, positioning, control. Students will be introduced to submissions and basic ground techniques.

Time: 5:00-5:45 PM

Fee: Members $60 Participants $74

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Ages: 7* and up

*7 year old must be intermediate level and have instructor approval prior to registration.

Emphasis: Focus is placed on beginner and intermediate fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a faster and more progressive pace. There is an emphasis on belt progression. Students will learn advanced submission techniques and have the opportunity to participate on the competition team in local and regional tournaments although not required.

Time: 5:50-6:50 PM
