What is GEAR UP?
The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) program is a partnership between the South Bay Family YMCA, Sweetwater Union High School District and several academic universities. The goal of the program is to significantly increase the number of students qualifying, applying and attending college by the year 2011. The program is specifically designed for current 10th graders at 6 South Bay and Border View high schools and uses a multifaceted approach to expose students to the opportunities and benefits of higher education.YMCA GEAR UP Services
The YMCA places one GEAR UP tutor at each school site. The tutors provide a variety of services that include: in-class tutoring, after-school leadership clubs and tutoring, and community service opportunities.
